Functional Incontinence

What is functional incontinence?

Functional incontinence happens when a person does not recognise the need to go to the toilet gets confused as to where to find the toilet.

It can be very distressful for the person as this then involves them not being able to reach the toilet in time and going through the possible embarrassment of wetting themselves.

What causes functional incontinence?

Functional incontinence has many causes, including:

  • Dementia
  • Poor mobility
  • Poor dexterity (a lack of fine motor skills makes removing clothing difficult)
  • Alcohol-induced behaviour
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Mental stability
  • Drug-induced behaviour
